Management can be a broad scientific concept that has many different definitions. Three definitions of management are: “the group of individuals who make decisions about how a business is run”; “The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials and money”; and “Management is nothing more than motivating people”. The first definition, “the group of individuals who make decisions about how a business is run”, is a broad definition that defines managers as the leaders. Furthermore, “The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials and money” is a more detailed and specific definition of management. The third and final definition, “Management is nothing more than motivating people” is a very simple but somewhat descriptive definition. As observed, these definitions have similarities in the sense that they define some sense of leadership and manipulation. On the other hand, the specificity and activities illustrated of each definition define their differences. In fact, one difference found in the first two definitions is the degree of specificity itself.

Management may sometimes differ in terms of specific actions. The definition “the group of individuals who make decisions about how a business is run” is a general definition that simply entails that managers are the decision makers in an organization. On the other hand, the definition, “The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials and money” shows how managers are concocted with the factors of production. Moreover, resources are mentioned in this specific definition. Therefore, with the latter definition, individuals can comprehend that management is an applied concept that involves undertakings, rather than just having management realized as a mental embodiment, which the first definition determines. In addition, “the group of individuals who make decisions about how a business is run” has differences with the third definition introduced.

“The group of individuals who make decisions about how a business is run” and “Management is nothing more than motivating people” have similar differences like how the first two definitions have. Once again, the first definition is just a more vague explanation of what management is. However, the latter definition defines some action, motivation, involved. It is now reminded that management is more applicative when differentiating the two definitions. “Motivating” is now a specified role of management mentioned. This differs from the initial definition because it is more detailed and hands-on. With the definition about motivation compared to the first definition, observers will analyze how management is more than just making decisions. In fact, an analysis may be that one of the decisions made is motivation. This definition itself has a difference with the second definition listed.

“The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials and money” and “Management is nothing more than motivating people” are two similarly outlined definitions. However, the latter definition limits management to just motivating people. In other words, the former definition illustrates coordination, factors of industrial production and even organization, which is a fundamental role of managers. Moreover, with this definition, observers can conclude that management is more than just motivating subordinates and coworkers.  For example, an individual utilizing the “factor of production” definition can realize how diverse managers process. All in all, the former definition seems more explanatory and revealing about managers than the latter definition does. Even though all three definitions differ in explanation, they all have one common similarity.

All three definitions summarize how managers are manipulators of some sort. “The group of individuals who make decisions about how a business is run”; “The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials and money”; and “Management is nothing more than motivating people” all show how managers are on a prominent level where they can influence motivation, coordination, factors of production and other elements of processing input into final products. The first definition and the second definition are similar because both define leadership. Making decisions and coordination are two very distinct features of leading, a managerial role. The first and third definitions are similar because once again, two similar factors are interconnected. In this case, motivating can definitely be considered a decision as well. The second and final definitions are similar because they both entail how managers influence either factors of production or people. For example, these products can be motivated workers, organized schedules, achieved goals and manufactured goods. Although all three definitions expose and clarify distinct characteristics of managers, they all depict what managers really are.

In conclusion, the group of individuals who make decisions about how a business is run”; “The organization and coordination of the activities of a business in order to achieve defined objectives. Management is often included as a factor of production along with machines, materials and money”; and “Management is nothing more than motivating people” draw many different features of managers and management. Sometimes, these features are specifically mentioned by actions. At times, individuals observe management as just a general science. However, it can be agreed and inferred that management is a study of manipulation of resources and actions to bring results.
